1 Little Grebe, Tachybaptus ruficollis Several at the Zakaki pool.
2 Great Cormorant, Phalacrocorax carbo 1 over Pafos headland on 31st.
3 Grey Heron, Ardea cinerea 1 over Asprokremmos Dam on 31st.
4 Purple Heron, Ardea purpurea 1 at Zakaki and 1 over Pafos headland.
5 Glossy Ibis, Plegadis falcinellus 1 over Kato Pafos on 27th.
6 Greater Flamingo, Phoenicopterus roseus Distant pink blobs on Akrotiri salt lake through heat haze.
7 Garganey, Anas querquedula 4 on Zakaki pool on 28th.
8 Ferruginous Duck, Aythya nyroca Several at the Zakaki pool.
9 Marsh Harrier, Circus aeruginosus 1 over Fassouri reedbed on 28th.
10 Pallid Harrier, Circus macrourus Males at Pafos headland and Zakaki on 1st.
11 Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Accipiter nisus 1 at Pafos headland on 1st.
?Northern Goshawk, Accipiter gentilis? 1 at Smigies on the Akamas Peninsula on 29th. Too brief to claim a certain record.
12 Eurasian Kestrel, Falco tinnunculus Common. Checked for Lessers, mindful that everyone back home was watching one at Minsmere!
13 Peregrine Falcon, Falco peregrinus 1 over Asprokremmos Dam on 31st.
14 Chukar, Alectoris chukar 1 in the Diarizos valley and one below Asprokremmos Dam.
15 Black Francolin, Francolinus francolinus Heard almost constantly around Akrotiri Salt Lake, Fassouri and Zakaki but only seen at Fassouri: 1 flushed inadvertently from reeds.
16 Common Quail, Coturnix coturnix Commonly heard, including from the field adjacent to our apartment.
17 Common Moorhen, Gallinula chloropus Several at the Zakaki pool.
18 Eurasian Coot, Fulica atra Several at the Zakaki pool.
19 Spur-winged Plover, Vanellus spinosus 2 at Pafos headland on 31st.
20 Kentish Plover, Charadrius alexandrinus Several at southern edge of Akrotiri Salt Lake.
21 Common Snipe, Gallinago gallinago 1 on a saltmarsh pool at Zakaki on 1st. Checked for Great Snipe!
22 Black-tailed Godwit, Limosa limosa 2 at Zakaki on 1st.
23 Common Greenshank, Tringa nebularia 1 heard at Pafos headland on 1st.
24 Green Sandpiper, Tringa ochropus 2 at Zakaki on both visits.
25 Common Sandpiper, Actitis hypoleucos 1 in Pafos harbour on 1st.
?Little Stint, Calidris minuta? 2 stints at southern edge of Akrotiri Salt Lake when we weren’t carrying the scope.
26 Ruff, Philomachus pugnax About 40 at southern edge of Akrotiri Salt Lake on 28th; a few elsewhere.
27 Audouin’s Gull, Larus audouinii 1 past Avdimou beach on 2nd.
28 Lesser Black-backed Gull, Larus fuscus 2 over Zakaki on 2nd.
29 Yellow-legged Gull, Larus michahellis Frequently seen in ones and twos.
30 Slender-billed Gull, Larus genei Two flocks totalling 45 birds NW off Pafos headland on 31st.
tern sp., Sternidae 1 diving very distantly off Pafos on 28th.
31 Feral Pigeon, Columba livia Very common.
32 Wood Pigeon, Columba palumbus Common.
33 Collared Dove, Streptopelia decaocto Very common.
34 Great Spotted Cuckoo, Clamator glandarius 1 at Asprokremmos Dam on 31st.
35 Common Cuckoo, Cuculus canorus 1 at Asprokremmos Dam on 31st, simultaneously on view while watching the Great Spotted Cuckoo. Also heard in the mountains.
36 Barn Owl, Tyto alba 1 in the headlights on the edge of Kato Pafos.
37 Little Owl, Athene noctua 1 in a cave at Asprokremmos Dam.
38 Alpine Swift, Tachymarptis melba Pairs or small flocks seen on four or five occasions.
39 Common Swift, Apus apus Several most days.
40 Pallid Swift, Apus pallidus 2 or more in with Common Swifts on 28th and 29th over Kato Pafos.
41 Common Kingfisher, Alcedo atthis 1 over dry fields at Pafos headland on 31st.
42 Hoopoe, Upupa epops 1 or 2 at Pafos headland on 1st.
43 Eurasian Wryneck, Jynx torquilla 1 at Pafos headland on 31st.
44 Greater Short-toed Lark, Calandrella brachydactyla Only seen at Pafos headland with up to 20 present, and migrating(?) over Kato Pafos in ones and twos early mornings.
45 Crested Lark, Galerida cristata Common.
46 Skylark, Alauda arvensis 1 at Pafos headland on 4th, possibly other fly-overs overlooked as Short-toeds?
47 Sand Martin, Riparia riparia 1 over Kato Pafos on 28th the only one of the trip.
48 Barn Swallow, Hirundo rustica Common.
49 Red-rumped Swallow, Hirundo daurica Fairly common but much less so than Barn Swallow.
50 House Martin, Delichon urbica Common.
51 White Wagtail, Motacilla alba Fairly common.
52 Yellow Wagtail, Motacilla flava Black-headed Wagtail was common with about 90 seen on 31st at Pafos. Single male Blue-headeds seen on several occasions, and a ‘dombrowskii‘ male seen at Pafos headland on 31st.
53 Tawny Pipit, Anthus campestris 2 at Pafos headland on 4th.
54 Tree Pipit, Anthus trivialis Fairly common.
55 Meadow Pipit, Anthus pratensis Fairly common.
56 Red-throated Pipit, Anthus cervinus Fairly common.
57 Winter Wren, Troglodytes troglodytes Heard in the Troodos Mountains.
58 Eurasian Blackbird, Turdus merula Troodos Mountains only.
59 Song Thrush, Turdus philomelos Several around earlier in the week.
60 Zitting Cisticola, Cisticola juncidis Common.
61 Cetti’s Warbler, Cettia cetti Common and seemingly not restricted to wet places as they are in Britain.
62 Sedge Warbler, Acrocephalus schoenobaenus 1 at Zakaki on 1st.
63 Reed Warbler, Acrocephalus scirpaceus Heard at Zakaki and Fassouri.
64 Chiffchaff, Phylloscopus collybita 2 or 3 seen.
65 Blackcap, Sylvia atricapilla Common.
66 Common Whitethroat, Sylvia communis 1 at Pafos headland on 31st.
67 Lesser Whitethroat, Sylvia curruca Fairly common.
68 Sardinian Warbler, Sylvia melanocephala Common and feeding young.
69 Cyprus Warbler, Sylvia melanothorax Common at Asprokremmos Dam and Ancient Kourion.
70 Spectacled Warbler, Sylvia conspicillata 1 in low halophyte scrub behind Lady’s Mile Beach.
71 Collared Flycatcher, Ficedula albicollis Male at Smigies on 29th, female of this or Semi-collared at Asprokremmos Dam on 31st. Two other male black-and-white flycatchers seen only in flight!
72 Nightingale, Luscinia megarhynchos Several seen well during the week, well enough to see the length of the 1st primary.
73 Black Redstart, Phoenicurus ochruros 1 at Pafos headland on 30th.
74 European Stonechat, Saxicola rubicola Just 2 seen.
75 Northern Wheatear, Oenanthe oenanthe Fairly common.
76 Cyprus Wheatear, Oenanthe cypriaca Common.
77 Black-eared Wheatear, Oenanthe hispanica 2 males and a female at Pafos headland on 4th.
78 Desert Wheatear, Oenanthe deserti A female on the seafront at Kato Pafos on 3rd.
79 Coal Tit, Periparus ater In the Troodos Mountains.
80 Great Tit, Parus major Common.
81 Masked Shrike, Lanius nubicus A pair at Trooditiss picinic site in the Troodos Mountains.
82 Eurasian Jay, Garrulus glandarius In the Troodos Mountains.
83 Magpie, Pica pica Fairly common.
84 Eurasian Jackdaw, Corvus monedula Common at higher altitude.
85 Hooded Crow, Corvus cornix Common.
86 Ortolan Bunting, Emberiza hortulana 2 separate individuals at Ancient Kourion on 2nd, a male and a female.
87 Cretzschmar’s Bunting, Emberiza caesia Seen on several occasions in parties of up to 4.
88 Corn Bunting, Emberiza calandra Common, at least on Pafos headland.
89 Chaffinch, Fringilla coelebs In the Troodos Mountains.
90 European Greenfinch, Carduelis chloris Common.
91 European Goldfinch, Carduelis carduelis Common.
92 Eurasian Linnet, Carduelis cannabina Common but less so than Greenfinch and Goldfinch.
93 European Serin, Serinus serinus Seen at Smigies on the Akamas Peninsula and elsewhere.
94 House Sparrow, Passer domesticus The commonest bird.
95 Spanish Sparrow, Passer hispaniolensis Common, at least on Pafos headland. Seemed to be large daily fluctuations in numbers as though they are migrants there.
